On September 30, 2020 Microsoft India announced the addition of Assamese as the newest addition to Indian language in Microsoft Translator. Microsoft will now provide real-time translation for the language. As an Assamese myself I feel proud of this recognition and this will usher in a new era for Assamese Businesses. Users will now be able to translate speech into Assamese text or to translate Assamese text into another language via speech output.
Including Assamese, Microsoft now supports translation for 12 Indian languages. The other 11 languages that they support are- Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. This service is part of Microsoft Cognitive Services. Microsoft is currently the only company to provide Assamese translation. Strengthening their position in democratizing the access of the information in the native tongue. Microsoft has taken the lead in providing communication support for Assamese, overcoming the complexities used to develop the communication infrastructure.
Assamese is the official language of the state of Assam and more than 10 million people speak this language. In other words, using Microsoft Translator, users can translate Assamese text in their apps, websites with Microsoft Cognitive Services Translator. Businesses can also avail of multi-language support such as translation for e-content, e-commerce product catalogues, product documentation among others. Above all, this service will allow over 90% of Indians to access information in their preferred languages. Companies can leverage this service to globalize their business and strengthen customer outreach. Microsoft Translator is available on Windows, iOS, Android, and the web.

Although Assamese is a great language to communicate with people it is not feasible to do business in today’s globalization age. Almost every business today has to communicate in English in one way or the other. As a fellow Assamese myself I feel like this will give our community a great push. As this will bring more eyes to the untapped potential of the Assamese market.

How to use Microsoft Translator in your device?
So, to use this service in your computer, head over to the Microsoft Store on your Windows Computer. You can also use the web version of the translator if you’re using Bing as their search engine. Mac users can also use this on their device if they are using Microsoft Office 365. To use it on your Android device head to Play Store and download the “Microsoft Translator” app. If you’re an iPhone user go to the App Store and download the “Microsoft Translator” app. Note that the Microsoft Translator Services is offered free of charge.
